We are an association of five female filmmakers and media artists based in Leipzig. As Kante we realise commissioned works in the field of film and moving image that give visibility to socially relevant, artistic and sustainable topics.

We studied artistic film, media art, photography as well as ethnology, cultural and media studies at various universities. As Kante, we have experience in working with complex contexts. We approach topics with sensitivity and a critical-artistic eye.

It is important to us to realise projects under fair production conditions and at eye level with our clients. As a team, we work in solidarity and on an equal footing.

Together with our clients, we develop an individual concept for each project based on content and context. We have our own professional camera and sound equipment and expand our team as a flexible unit with partners from our network, depending on the production requirements.

Our previous clients include social and cultural institutions, educational establishments, museums, theatres, architecture and design offices, artists, musicians and curators. We realise event documentaries, exhibition and music films, theatre and concert adaptations, live streamings, site visits, portraits, performance films and trailers.

In anderen Umstaenden (In different circumstances) is a web documentary. 12 people with learning difficulties talk about their experiences with wanting children and parenthood. And they demand from society: We want different circumstances!

Each protagonist is presented on the accessible website in several films: There is one message, one film with everyday scenes and one longer conversation per person. After 25 years of restoration, the Dresden State Art Collections are presenting the completely rebuilt Damascus Room for the first time. The richly decorated reception room is considered a unique example of Syrian decorative art and is to once again become a place of encounter in Dresden.

The documentary, made in close cooperation with the museum, reflects on the history of the Damascus Room and its extensive restoration. The film poses the question of what the presentation of a historical reception room means for a museum of the present.

For the New Music Casting Show initiated by the CRISPR.kollektiv, we produced five video clips integrated into the performance as well as a trailer and a project documentation.

The GEGENkino Festival is an annual international film festival in Leipzig since 2014. Working collectively and driven by cinephile passion, it aims to challenge entrenched viewing habits with unusual perceptions. The presentation of film and video art goes beyond a classical screening.

In 2022, the festival screened the Japanese silent film classic A page of madness, narrated live and set to music by benshi Ichiro Kataoka and pianist Reiko Emura. In the preceding panel discussion, the profession as a benshi was discussed, but also the Kataoka Record Project. Kataoka had given his collection of 3900 Japanese shellac records to the University of Bonn in 2012. The worldwide unique collection includes records from the years 1915 to 1950, mainly from the film and entertainment culture of Japan of those years.

We filmed the panel discussion as well as impressions from the live scoring and created a documentary of the evening.

The happening 30 Hours Round Table in cooperation with the Leipzig Women’s Festival brought together social initiatives and citizens on the Leipzig market square on 25 and 26 June 2021 to jointly set an example for social participation and gender justice. Based on the voices of the GDR women's movement of 89/90, the action created a space for remembrance, in which the future was negotiated with each other at the same time.

With the documentation of the event, we have produced a manual on how 30h Round Table works, or could work.

At the online symposium EmPOWERment of girls and young women in the context of migration and racism on 10 November 2020, speakers and participants exchanged views in lectures and workshops on topics such as Decolonial pedagogy, Recognising discrimination - what rights do girls have?, What can I do as a professional in cases of discrimination?, Violence in the name of honour and forced marriage - how can I as a professional provide adequate and racism-sensitive support?

We recorded the symposium and created a film, which gives an insight into the day: SISTERS* symposium

Girls and young women with migration or refugee stories are exposed to multiple discrimination (sexism, racism, classism, etc.), which is why they have to struggle with many challenges in a white-dominated society. SISTERS wants to be contact persons and role models, especially in the rural areas of Saxony and as women of colour who are affected themselves. On the one hand, SISTERS organises empowering actions and, on the other hand, works together with educational professionals.

The video presents the racism-critical work of SISTERS in Saxony, discusses successes and challenges and invites you to become active yourself: SISTERS* presentation film

For the exhibition of the material-based cooperation project mtrl in the Werkschauhalle of the Leipzig Baumwollspinnerei, an exhibition film was created in spring 2021.

In the joint exhibition, the artists from Düsseldorf, Cologne and Leipzig involved in the project relate their sculptural positions, which were developed from different approaches to action. The exhibition examines which interests the individual artists have in certain, often found materials, which strategies they use, and whether attributions such as collage, assemblage, bricolage, or accumulation apply. The spectrum of materialities shown includes mycelium organisms as well as everyday, building, or industrial materials, movement, light, and sound.

1023 — Lyric Suite by Alban Berg. Expanded Concert
Screen adaptation
Бükü & Schaubühne Leipzig
2021
Genre  Filmische Adaption, Dokumentation
Role  Konzeption, Bildgestaltung
Field  Geschichte, Musik

In May 1925, at the height of his career, Alban Berg met the married Hanna Fuchs. His love for her, as hopeless as it is pathetic, plunges him into a life crisis. While his bourgeois façade begins to crumble, the artistic side takes on unheard-of blossoms. Obsessed with the idea that Hanna is destined for him, he weaves the longings he has kept secret into the composition of the "Lyric Suite" for string quartet. Berg works like a master cathedral builder, calculating everything down to the smallest detail in order to encode secret messages in the music: The piece is bursting with coded anagrams, quotations and number games. This only becomes known fifty years later with the discovery of his secret letters to Hanna, which went from Vienna to Prague for almost ten years. Among others, Theodor W. Adorno, Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel served as postillions d'amour.
Guided by the desire to experience this music, thought to be completely cerebral, as an insight into the composer's emotional world, as his musical psychogram, "1023" is more than a classical concert: the audience can expect a cross-media collage. Simultaneously with the performance of the "Lyric Suite" by the Schumann Quartet—"one of the very best formations of the current quartet flowering" (SZ)—the video artist Murat Haschu presents his interlinear version of the music on three projection screens. In addition, presenter Rebecca Maria Salentin will introduce the history of the work's creation and recite from Berg's letters beforehand."

For the web edition of the Balance Club / Culture Festival Leipzig 2020 we accompanied the recording of three video DJ sets in front of green screen and realized their post production.

The Festival sees itself as an interface between club culture and social criticism. By interweaving discourse, art and club, it creates the possibility to explore counterculture in its many facets and to enable political debates. Balance is offensive, interdisciplinary, feminist, performative and hybrid.

A utopia - what does it actually look like? How can it be imagined, experienced or tested?

For six days, the grassroots-organised congress worked on drafts for a social-ecological utopia. Due to the Corona pandemic, the congress took place mainly online. Besides panel discussions, there was a broad art and cultural programme that creatively asked questions about a just, ecological and feasible future.

We accompanied the congress in its various facets on all days and produced a short documentary, a video for the fundraising campaign and various social media clips.
